How to become a data center electrician: licence and training

The journeyman licence comes first, then the switchgear, UPS and generator work data centers add, and NFPA 70E, named in 204 live ads on 22 October 2026.

To become a data center electrician, you become a licensed electrician first: an apprenticeship, then a journeyman licence, and a master licence later if you want it. There is no separate data center licence, and data center experience does not stand in for the trade one. What the data center adds sits on top: medium-voltage gear, UPS systems, switchgear, generators and transfer switches, and the safety discipline NFPA 70E sets out.

On 22 October 2026, NFPA 70E and the journeyman licence were the two credentials named most often on this board: 204 of the 3,217 live ads named NFPA 70E, and 172 mentioned a journeyman licence or journeyman-level work. The work splits into two jobs: building data centers, for contractors whose crews move from site to site, and running them, on a critical facilities team that works shifts.

The licence comes first

Most electricians learn the trade in a four- or five-year apprenticeship, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics: around 2,000 paid hours a year on the job, plus classroom time that federal apprenticeship rules recommend should total at least 144 hours a year. Most states then require a licensing exam on the National Electrical Code and state and local codes.

The licence ladder
1
Apprentice
Four or five years, about 2,000 paid hours a year plus classroom time
2
Journeyman
Pass your state's exam on the electrical code, then work without supervision
3
Master
More years and hours; in Texas, two years as a journeyman and 12,000 hours
Rules vary by state; the Texas figures are TDLR's. Data center experience sits on top of this ladder, not instead of it.

Rules vary by state, so check your own board first. Two data center states show the range:

  • Texas requires 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under a Texas master electrician for a journeyman licence, and lets you sit the exam at 7,000 (TDLR). The exam is based on the state's adopted edition of the National Electrical Code, which you may consult during it.
  • Virginia accepts four years of practical experience plus 240 hours of formal vocational training for the journeyman exam, with fewer classroom hours for each extra year of experience (DPOR).

The journeyman licence lets you work without supervision. The master licence above it takes more: in Texas, two years as a journeyman and 12,000 hours of supervised work; in Virginia, a year as a licensed journeyman. On 22 October 2026, 40 live ads named a master electrician.

Where the training comes from

An apprenticeship pays you while you learn, so start there. There are three ways in.

  • Union. The IBEW, the electricians' union, and NECA, the contractors' association, run apprenticeships through local committees (JATCs) to standards set by the electrical training alliance. You apply locally. The alliance's minimum is age 18, a high school education including a year of algebra, a qualifying aptitude test score and being drug-free. Data center work falls under inside wireman, the classification for commercial and industrial buildings. At IBEW Local 26, the Washington, DC local, the apprenticeship runs five years with at least 8,000 hours under a journeyman, and pay rises through six periods from 45% to 80% of the journeyman rate: $27.90 to $49.60 an hour on the scale effective 1 June 2026, against a journeyman's $62.00 plus benefits.
  • Open shop. The Independent Electrical Contractors run a program recognized by the Department of Labor that takes about four years: at least 8,000 hours working for a member contractor and 576 hours of evening classes, whose cost is often shared by the employer or covered by state funding.
  • Direct. Some employers hire apprentices themselves. On 22 October 2026 the board carried three electrical apprentice posts, from IREN in Childress, Texas, Loenbro in Red Oak, Texas, and Switch in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The BLS notes that some in-house programs are not recognized apprenticeships, so check that the hours count toward your state's licence.

Technical school is the route you pay for, and some states credit it: Virginia accepts a two-year program plus two years of experience for its journeyman exam.

What data center work adds

A data center electrician installs or maintains the power system of a building that is not allowed to go dark: medium-voltage switchgear and transformers, UPS systems and their batteries, and generators with the transfer switches that move the load onto them. On a running site, planned work follows a written method of procedure, or MOP, approved in advance; 305 live ads across the board mentioned MOPs on 22 October 2026.

Of the 198 live ads that were either on the electrician hub or mentioned a journeyman licence, 70 mentioned lockout/tagout, 64 switchgear, 56 UPS systems, 55 generators, 24 arc flash and 13 medium voltage.

The safety discipline is NFPA 70E, the National Fire Protection Association's Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace: shock and arc flash risk, PPE, and making equipment electrically safe before work starts. OSHA's rules are the law; NFPA describes 70E as setting out ways to comply with them. The employer must run an electrical safety program, and you are qualified for specific equipment and tasks, so the training normally comes from the employer, at the site. Online courses cost about $50 to $300 if you want a head start, but being qualified is a status at a site, not a card you carry between jobs.

NFPA 70E was the most-named credential on the board, and the operating side named it most: of its 204 ads, 62 were critical facilities roles, against 30 in construction and 12 on the electrician hub.

Building data centers versus running them

IREN (34 ads), M.C. Dean (22), CyrusOne (18), ABM (11) and Loenbro (10) named a journeyman licence most often, and EMCOR, Amazon and xAI had 9 each.

Building them means working for an electrical contractor or builder on a new campus, then moving on to the next. Loenbro, M.C. Dean, IES Holdings, STO Building Group and Turner Construction all post this work. OSHA 30 is the safety card contractors ask for, and 15 electrician-hub ads named it; see which jobs require OSHA 30.

The electrician hub leans this way. On 22 October 2026 it held 57 live ads, its most common title was Electrical Superintendent, and superintendent jobs made up more than a third of it, at least eight of them traveling roles. Most ads that mention a journeyman licence are listed elsewhere: of the 172, 58 were critical facilities roles, 44 construction, 31 on the electrician hub and 11 commissioning, while 20 were HVAC roles, where the word can mean a mechanical journeyman.

Running them means joining a site's critical facilities team and maintaining that gear around the clock on a shift rotation. These ads come from operators and the facilities firms that run sites for them, CyrusOne, Amazon, xAI and ABM among them; IREN posts both kinds at its campus in Childress, Texas. Jobs titled critical facilities engineer or technician are listed on the critical facilities hub even when they ask for a journeyman licence, which is why 58 sit there.

Pay

Stated pay on the ads mentioning a journeyman licence, on 22 October 2026: the median midpoint of 40 hourly ranges was $45 an hour (ranges ran from $23 to $76), and of 24 yearly ranges, $131,000 ($65,000 to $250,000). The other 108 stated no figure. The electrician hub alone is too thin to read: 11 of its 57 ads stated pay.

For comparison, the BLS puts the median pay of all US electricians at $30.38 an hour, or $63,190 a year, in May 2025. That is not like for like: the BLS median is what electricians earned, in every kind of work and region, while an ad's midpoint is one employer's offer for one job, and the electrical ads here include superintendent and traveling roles. An ad is not a hire, either. The data center electrician salary page has the current stated figures.

Travel and per diem

Build crews follow the projects. Of the 198 electrician-hub and journeyman-licence ads, 84 mentioned travel and 10 a per diem, the daily allowance for living away from home; on the electrician hub, 7 ads stated a per diem and 4 a share of time on the road. Ask what the per diem covers. Only 11 of the 198 mentioned a union or the IBEW, so ask about that too if it matters to you.

Where to start

  1. Get into an apprenticeship. Apply to a local JATC, found through the electrical training alliance, to an IEC chapter, or to a contractor hiring apprentices directly. Data center apprenticeships and training programs has more on the routes in.
  2. Log your hours the way your state counts them, under the supervision it requires, and sit the journeyman exam when you qualify.
  3. Choose a side. To build, watch the construction and electrician hubs and get OSHA 30. To work shifts at one site, watch the critical facilities hub, where NFPA 70E training normally comes with the job.
  4. Read the licence line in each ad. The count of 172 takes in ads that require a journeyman licence, ads that would prefer one and ads that only mention journeyman-level work. A stated requirement is often softened to "or equivalent experience", and the counts move daily.
